About King Street Co-op Preschool

Since our founding in Seattle’s Central District in 1963, King Street Cooperative Preschool has centered on one belief: children learn best through play, in community.

We are a nonprofit, parent-run cooperative preschool serving children ages 1 to 5. Our classrooms are multi-age, play-based, and intentionally designed to support the social-emotional, cognitive, and creative growth of young children.

Families don’t just drop off here. They engage—helping in the classroom, shaping the school’s direction, and building deep connections with one another.

Our program is guided by five key values that shape everything we do.

Child-Centered

Children are the heart of our school. Our environment, curriculum, and adult interactions are shaped by what they need, what they’re curious about, and who they are.

Family-Friendly

We meet families where they are. With flexible schedules, a Plus One policy for siblings, and no potty-training requirement, we make co-op participation accessible, supportive, and community-driven.

Play-Based

We know play is serious learning. Through rich, open-ended play, children make sense of the world, build confidence, and develop skills that last a lifetime.

Problem-Solving

Social-emotional growth is at the core of early learning. With gentle adult guidance, children learn to express big feelings, navigate conflict, and practice empathy.

Anti-Bias

Every child is valued. Our curriculum helps children see diversity as strength and empowers them to stand up for justice.

King Street’s roots trace back to 1962 as part of Seattle Central Community College’s parent education lab school. In 1998, we became an independent nonprofit—and today, we continue to carry forward a legacy of joyful learning, family leadership, and social justice.
