Cooperative Model

At King Street, you don’t just join a preschool — you join a community.

We’re a true cooperative: families help run the school, participate in the classroom, and form lasting relationships. It’s a model built on trust, shared responsibility, and the belief that when families are involved, children thrive.

What Co-op Participation Looks Like

In the classroom: Families help in the classroom about one-third of the days your child(ren) attend, supporting play, transitions, and snack alongside the teacher. We provide all the training you need. you’ll be amazed how much you learn just by observing your own and others’ children in action.
*Note: we offer Full Drop-Off Days for grownups who’d like to opt out of working classroom shifts. Please see our Tuition & Financial Assistance page for additional information.

Monthly meetings: We gather as a community one evening per month to connect (either virtual or at school) to learn together and support each other. It’s part business, part community circle.

Co-op roles: Every family takes on a job that supports the school, such as laundry, fundraising, or helping with maintenance. Many roles are flexible or can be done from home. Expect each role to take 1-2 hours per week, which can be batched weekly, monthly, or however works for you and the responsibilities.

Leadership opportunities: Families also help shape big-picture decisions through our Board and committees. If you want to be more involved, you can be.

Support for All Kinds of Families

We know every household is different. Parents, family, and caregivers alike are welcome here.

  • We welcome all kinds of grownups into the classroom. Everyone who participates completes a background check and receives orientation.

  • Siblings under 1 are welcome to attend along with their grown up on your scheduled classroom days (our Plus One policy).

  • For families with more limited flexibility, we offer Drop-Off Days and alternate roles that don’t require in-classroom time. Inquire with the Registrar if you’re interested in these options.

We're here to make co-op life work for your family.

“I don’t think we would have the friendships and support that we have with our King St community if we had attended a drop off daycare/preschool. Working alongside the amazingly caring and skilled teachers has really given us tools and language to use when things are tough, when they’re going great and preparing our family for the next stage of development.”
